PalmPay speaks to the growing need for greater digital payment security

As Nigerians increasingly rely on digital platforms for everyday payments and transfers, the security of financial accounts has become a major concern, particularly in situations involving lost phones, compromised accounts and attempts to access customer information without their knowledge.

The risks associated with digital payments go beyond fraudulent transactions. Scams, identity theft, phishing attempts and social engineering tactics can expose customers to financial loss when sensitive information is obtained by unauthorized individuals.

Night-time activity can pose an additional challenge. When customers are asleep or less likely to monitor their accounts, unusual transactions or login attempts may go unnoticed for longer periods.

Speaking on the matter, Femi Hanson, Head of Marketing, PalmPay Nigeria, said digital security requires both technological safeguards and increased awareness among users.

“While fraud can occur at any time, there are situations where a compromised or lost phone can create additional risks overnight. Giving customers more control over when further verification is required can provide an additional layer of protection,” Hanson said.

It added that customers should remain cautious when responding to unexpected calls, messages or connections requesting personal, banking or account information.

PalmPay said customer education remains an important part of its approach to digital security, especially as scammers continue to adopt new methods of impersonation and social engineering.

The company also encouraged users of digital financial services to take basic precautions, including protecting their account credentials, avoiding unverified links and promptly reporting suspicious activity.
