Peter Obi allows UNN and other schools to publish his academic records amid certificate debate

Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has authorized the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other institutions he attends to release his academic records to persons who make legitimate requests.

Obi gave the approval through a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Valentine Obienyem.

The move comes amid renewed public discussion about the academic qualifications of political candidates and ongoing legal action to gain access to Obi’s university records.

Academic documents become the subject of legal dispute

The issue has attracted attention following a lawsuit filed by Abayomi Arabambi, a Labor Party leader, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Arabambi is seeking an order compelling the UNN to provide certified copies of documents relating to Obi’s degree in Philosophy, reportedly obtained by the institution in 1984.

The legal action brought Obi’s academic papers into public debate.

Obi says he has nothing to hide

Reacting to the development, Obi said he welcomes legitimate scrutiny of his educational background.

He said public officials and individuals seeking political office should be prepared to allow reasonable scrutiny of their qualifications.

According to him, transparency regarding academic credentials can strengthen democratic accountability.

He said he has no objection to the UNN releasing its certificates, deeds and other official documents where requests are made within the bounds of the law.

Consent extended to other institutes

The former governor of Anambra State has also authorized other educational institutions attended by him in Nigeria and abroad to provide relevant academic information through approved processes.

Obi said public trust in leadership depends on openness and accountability.

He argued that vetting of candidates for public office should be fair and applied consistently to all candidates.

“As a presidential candidate seeking the trust of Nigerians to lead our country, I welcome legitimate public interest in my background, qualifications and record,” he said.

Obi challenges other candidates

Obi also called on other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and related documents available for legitimate public review.

He said such disclosure would help build confidence in Nigeria’s political system.

According to him, leaders must demonstrate integrity, transparency and responsibility before asking citizens for their trust.

He argued that openness should become a standard expectation for anyone seeking the highest political office in Nigeria.
