Police order demonstrations in Osun to be suspended

‎The Police Command in Osun State has ordered political parties to suspend planned demonstrations in Oriade Local Government Area to prevent a possible outbreak of violence.

This is contained in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, in Osogbo on Tuesday.

Ojelabi advised political parties to reschedule demonstrations previously scheduled for Wednesday in the area, citing security concerns.

“The command wishes to advise all political parties, candidates, supporters and stakeholders to postpone to a new date the political rallies, rallies, campaigns and processions scheduled for Wednesday in Oriade Local Government Area.

“This advice is based on credible information and prevailing safety concerns within the local government area,” he said.

The police spokesperson noted that the directive was also influenced by the uncooperative attitude of some political actors, adding that the command’s efforts to broker peace ended in a stalemate.

He also revealed that a peace meeting previously scheduled by the Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Gotan, with the concerned political parties could not take place.

Ojelabi said the directive is a proactive measure to prevent any breach of peace and breakdown of law and order, as well as safeguard lives and property in the area.

“All political parties, candidates, supporters, followers and members of the public are urged to comply in the interest of peace,” he said.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and safe environment, urging residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies.
