A member of the House of Representatives representing Askira Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency of Borno State, Hon. Usman Midala Balami, called for decisive action by the federal government and military to rescue 42 pupils abducted by Boko Haram from a public school in the state
Balami made this appeal in an interview with journalists in Maiduguri, shortly after tabling a motion of urgent public importance in the House on Tuesday.
He maintained that a concerted effort and coordinated action is required to free the 42 pupils/students from the captivity of terrorists since last month.
The students were abducted from Mussa primary and secondary schools in Askira-Uba local government, southern Borno, on May 15 by suspected Boko Haram.
“I ask and urge the Federal Government and all relevant security agencies to take immediate and decisive action to rescue the 42 school children abducted from Mussa Ward, Askira-Uba Local Government, as well as all other persons currently held in captivity, and reunite them with their families;” said the Honorable Balami.
It also urged governments to expand and strengthen school protection initiatives to encourage student attendance in schools.
It warned that frequent attacks and abductions of pupils/students may compromise access to education. According to him, increasing attacks by armed groups can also increase fear among the population.
