Seven-year-olds Henry Awoyo and Imisioluwa Quadri became the center of attraction as the penultimate zonal qualifiers of the RIYE Under-15 Athletics circuit took place at the Gateway Stadium, Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
While several young athletes secured a qualifying place for the grand final scheduled for June 26, 2026, at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, it was the determination, courage and extraordinary performances of Henry and Imisi that caught the attention of spectators and organisers.
Competing against older athletes, the youngsters, both aged seven, showed exceptional zeal and commitment, crossing the 100m finish line in less than 20 seconds. Their performances drew applause from the audience and earned special recognition from the competition organizer, the Hon. Tunde Delu.
Hon Delu commended the parents of the boys for nurturing their children’s interest in athletics.
“I specifically commend Mr. Alaba Awoyo and the parents of Imisi, for encouraging the boys. The boys are sincerely interested and we will support their development.
“If they run under 20 seconds in the 100 meters at just seven years old, then we have future world champions on our hands who we must continue to monitor and encourage.”
Hon Delu also commended the members of the organizing committee for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the smooth conduct of the competition in various zones. He expressed satisfaction at the impressive voter turnout recorded in Abeokuta, Ilaro and Sagamu.
The RIYE Under-15 Athletics circuit continues to gain momentum as the final zonal qualifiers are currently taking place at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, where other athletes are battling for qualifying spots ahead of Friday’s grand finale in Abeokuta.
The initiative, powered by the Tunde Delu Initiative, aims to discover, nurture and develop young athletic talents across Ogun State, providing a platform for the next generation of champions to showcase their skills.
