Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the State of Anambra on Saturday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of unleashing violence during the senators of the south of Anambra, claiming that his commissioner for the environment, Felix Odimegwu, was physically attacked.
Soludo, who spoke with journalists shortly after launching his vote in the 002 polling station, Ofiyi Square, Isuofia Ward in the area of the agued local government, described the “shocking but not unexpected” accident.
According to him, Odimegwu was attacked in Ezinifite in the NNEWI South LGA by criminals who presumably moved with the candidate to the Governor of the APC in the state.
“Just in the last few minutes, I received a terrible report from Newi South. My commissioner suffered and cried that the candidate for the Governorate of the APC took a police and criminal truck, going from one electoral unit to another, beating the people, including him,” said Soludo.
He added that this despair was a sign of a party that was heading towards defeat.
“When you see that you are losing, you start to trigger violence to stop the electoral process. I understand that they are even losing in its department,” said the governor.
As he condemned the alleged assault, Soludo claimed that the will of the people prevailed.
“Let the people vote and let their votes count. This is all we are asking for,” he underlined.
The Governor, however, praised the independent national electoral commission (INC) for the performance of the supplementary elections, noting that the vote had been peaceful in most electoral units.
“I am happy that so far the process has been seamlessly. The relationships of the whole state show that it has been relatively peaceful and I am impressed by the fact that people came out to exercise their civil duty,” he said.
The supplementary elections followed the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, which represented Ambra South, in July 2024. The count of the votes had started in various electoral units at the time of the press.
