The proposal for a state police has excited an Igbo group, the Igbodike Movement, which has promised its full support for the re-election of President Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 if this is achieved.
The national coordinator of the group, Peter Nwankwo, energized by the proposal, pledged his group’s full support to the president’s aspiration as he vowed to conduct a million-dollar match in the South East to secure a massive vote for him.
Nwankwo in a statement issued to journalists in Owerri stressed that the creation of the state police would be a landmark achievement for the President who he said faced heavy security challenges upon assuming office.
He expressed optimism that his institution would help ameliorate overall security challenges in the country by enabling States to address challenges in their territories.
Its statement reads in part: “The Igbodike Movement noted that the establishment of the state police in Nigeria would help improve the overall security of the country by enabling states to more effectively address security challenges within their territories.
“This localized approach to policing will lead to rapid response and more effective crime prevention efforts.
“The establishment of the state police will improve community relations. State police forces will have better relationships with the communities they serve, as they will be more familiar with the local environment and culture.
This can help build trust between law enforcement and the public, leading to more effective crime prevention and resolution.
“State police forces can also allocate resources based on the specific needs of their communities, rather than depending on centralized decision-making by the federal government. This can lead to more efficient use of resources and more targeted law enforcement efforts.
“It will improve accountability.
State police forces will be more accountable to local communities, as residents and local authorities will have more direct control over policing. This can help reduce incidents of police abuse and misconduct, as well as improve overall professionalism and integrity within the force.”
Nwankwo added: “The establishment of state police will reduce political interference, the federal government can reduce political interference in law enforcement activities at the state level. This can help improve the independence and effectiveness of state police forces, leading to better overall security outcomes.
“The Igbodike Movement is clamoring for the continuation of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu until 2031.
