Sunshine Stars U-19 produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Federation President Cup after defeating Nigerian Premier Football League side Niger Tornadoes 2-1 in Ilorin to book their place in the round of 32.
The young Akure team stunned the 2019 Federation Cup runners-up with two quick goals in the first half at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl at the George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
Khalil Nurudeen opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Ugohukwu Lawrence doubled the lead just two minutes later, leaving Niger Tornadoes chasing the game for the rest of the match.
Despite dominating possession and using their experience to control big moments in the second half, the Niger Tornadoes struggled to break down the resilient Sunshine Stars U-19 defence. Abdulaziz Dalhatu finally scored in the 70th minute but it proved to be just a consolation as the young Akure team held firm to secure a famous victory.
Speaking after the match, Sunshine Stars U-19 coach Ayeni Adenike praised her players for their determination and fearless mentality against top-class opposition.
“I am very happy to have beaten a Premier team. It is not easy, but I congratulate my boys for their determination, they are ready to play against anyone at any time,” he said.
“They were the better team, they took advantage of their experience, but we took advantage of our opportunities early in the game and used our energy to finish the game.
“When I watched the game I wasn’t scared because I knew my boys and their determination during training. I knew we would make a statement.”
Coach Adenike also revealed that her team’s focus is now on winning both the N-Youth League Super Eight and the President Federation Cup.
“We take this energy to the Super Eight of the N-Youth League. Our goal is to win the Super Eight and also the President Federation Cup. I want to bring another trophy to Ondo State.
“The last time the state celebrated a trophy was the FA Cup triumph in 2013 with Sunshine Queens, of which I was captain,” she added.
The result marks a memorable moment for the Sunshine Stars youth team as they continue their impressive rise, while the Niger Tornadoes become one of the early casualties of this year’s competition.
