Arsenal are Premier League champions for the first time since Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles in 2004 after Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
It caps a remarkable achievement for Mikel Arteta in his first managerial role, the Spaniard who has transformed Arsenal into contenders since taking over from Unai Emery in December 2019.
His team have finished second in the last three seasons and led the way for much of this season before City reduced Arsenal’s nine-point lead after defeating them at the Etihad in April.
Despite carrying the scars of previous years, Arteta’s side emerged stronger from what effectively became a five-match playoff between the two contenders.
City blinked first when they drew against Everton, with Arsenal recording four consecutive wins without conceding a goal, culminating in Monday’s 1-0 win over Burnley.
Arteta said he expected to struggle to watch City’s match against Bournemouth given its importance, but Arsenal fans gathered in pubs near the Emirates waiting for Andoni Iraola’s team to secure a positive result and celebrated wildly at the final whistle, spilling into the streets. Within 10 minutes of the headline being confirmed, thousands of people were marching towards the Emirates.
Arsenal will receive the Premier League trophy at Selhurst Park on Sunday after facing Crystal Palace in their last match.
Arteta will become the longest-serving manager in England’s top four divisions when Guardiola’s departure from City after 10 years is confirmed and will have the chance to emulate his mentor by winning the Champions League when Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain on May 30.
Only five times has an English team won the top flight and European Cup in the same season, with City the latest to achieve that feat in 2023.
