SWAN extends the date of the triennial congress and inaugurates the electoral committee for the 2026 elections


The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has approved a one-month extension to host its triennial National Delegates Congress and inaugurated a seven-member election committee to conduct the Association’s national elections in 2026.

The resolutions were reached at the SWAN Full Council meeting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, attended by members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), state chapter presidents and secretaries.

According to a statement released at the end of the meeting and signed by SWAN Secretary General, Ikenna Okonkwo, the Council unanimously approved an appeal requesting a one-month extension to host the Triennial Congress of Delegates.

The statement stated that the congress would be held no earlier than July and no later than August 2026.

The Council also adopted the composition of the SWAN Election Committee (SWANECO) for the conduct of the Association’s 2026 national elections.

Following the adoption, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin officially inaugurated the seven-member committee and entrusted it with the responsibility of conducting credible, transparent, free and fair elections in line with the Association’s statutes and democratic principles.

The committee has Hembadoon Orsar as chairman, while Jacob Onjewu Dickson will serve as secretary.

Other members of the committee are Bisi Ogunleye, Bala Bawaji, Chimezie Anaso, Emmanuel Akpan and Bushrat Yusuf.

Speaking on behalf of the committee after the inauguration, Orsar thanked the SWAN president and NEC members for their confidence in the committee, assuring that the committee would implement an electoral process that would uphold the integrity and standard of the Association.

The full Board also commended the members of the Association for their continued dedication, unity and commitment to the ideals and growth of SWAN.

The statement signed by the General Secretary of the Association, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, with the editorial board chaired by Alfred Saiki, Timinepre Ohia as member and Samuel Ahmadu as secretary.
