Tennis Federation President Victor Ochei reveals plan to give registration numbers to all Nigerian players

President of the Nigerian Tennis Federation (NTF), Victor Ochei, has revealed that an elaborate plan has been put in place whereby all players in the country will have registration numbers, Sports247 reports.

Ochei stated that the registration number scheme is part of the youth-driven reform agenda of the current NTF executive committee, which aims to expand participation and strengthen the structure of tennis development.

He added that the new board is prioritizing grassroots engagement and long-term planning to reposition tennis in Nigeria, while creating a unified database to improve player tracking and access to competitions.

To that end, the nationwide registration initiative will assign a unique identification number to each Nigerian tennis player, while facilitating the identification, development and support of emerging talents in different regions.

While highlighting his long involvement in sports development, Ochei noted that investments in youth programs remain central to his approach, including sponsoring athletes to gain competitive experience on the world stage.

Ochei highlighted initiatives such as the Village Unity Cup, an annual tournament he established to promote peace, unity and youth engagement through sports, as he is dedicated to nurturing young athletes as they transition into the professional ranks.

“We want every registered tennis player to have a number. This will help us build a complete compendium and will also make it easier for players to access tennis clubs and competitions across the country.

“Our goal is to catch them young, generate interest early on and create a sustainable pipeline of champions who represent Nigeria with pride,” said Ochei, who also revealed a 10-year Tennis Strategic Growth Plan from 2026 to 2036.
