Cyriel Dessers was the hero for Greek Panathinaikos in their 2-1 Europa Conference League playoff victory over Croatian side Hradec Kralove, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Dessers, who was part of the Super Eagles squad in the last AFCON but had to leave the field after suffering an injury that kept him out of the tournament, showed his predatory instincts by coming on as a substitute.
He put his team ahead in the 72nd minute to give them the lead in the tie, but Hradec Kralove equalized to force the tie into extra time, and the Nigerian decided the match from the spot.
In the fifth minute added to the second half of extra time, when the match was approaching penalties, Dessers secured his team’s place in the group stage of the tournament with a well-taken penalty.
He showed no nerves from the penalty spot in practically the last kick of the game, when his team took the overall victory 4-3, breaking the hearts of the home fans.
