The FRSC recovers the weapon from the scene of the incident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has strengthened its growing role in national security and global road safety leadership following the recovery of a double-barreled pistol from the scene of a road accident in Anambra State and Nigeria’s active participation in the United Nations high-level meeting on improving global road safety in New York.

The weapon was recovered on Friday at about 2.30pm by the FRSC rescue patrol team of Anambra State Sector Command while carrying out a routine inventory of the victims’ belongings after rescue operations along the Awka-Enugu Expressway. Officers discovered the weapon hidden among luggage inside one of the crashed vehicles.

In accordance with established operational procedures, the rescue team immediately secured the weapon to prevent unauthorized access and handed it over to the Nigeria Police Force after no applicant or valid documentation for the weapon was found at the scene, as stated in a statement signed on Sunday in Abuja by the force’s spokesperson, Osondu Ohaeri.

Praising the professionalism and vigilance of the rescue team, Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the incident highlights the FRSC’s growing contribution to national security beyond its statutory responsibility of managing road traffic.

He noted that while the force remains committed to preventing crashes, rescuing victims and ensuring safer highways, its officers often serve as critical first responders whose readiness has led to the recovery of stolen vehicles, dangerous weapons and other security-sensitive items.

The Corps Marshal assured Nigerians that the FRSC will continue to strengthen collaboration with security and law enforcement agencies to protect lives and property, while supporting national security objectives.
