The IMO State Ministry of Sport has announced its intention to seek a renunciation of the state government to recruit young athletes and expert coaches in the IMO state sports commission.

The Commissioner for Sport, Hon. Evaristus Obinna Onyeocha (Onowu), made this known during an interactive session with the members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), chapter of the Imo State, led by President Cosmos Chukwuemeka, in his office in the State Secretariat, Port Harcourt Road, Owerri.

Onyeocha observed that IMO is blessed with abundant sports talents, many of whom are currently excellent outside the state. He stressed that using them as public employees with regular wages would be a fundamental step to attract them home.

“If this renunciation is approved, our young athletes will gradually replace aging and pension sports and women in the commission,” explained the commissioner.

He expressed joy for the progress of young IMO athletes, in particular their performance in the latest national youth games of Asaba, in the Delta State. The state contingent won a total of 17 medals, exceeding its previous records.

The salient points of the medal radius includes:

Gold in the cricket

Gold in Abula (women’s team)

Silver in Abula (male team)

Eight silver medals in light athletics, arrows and other events

Six bronze medals

Three medals, including a gold in the shooting: a sports imo participated for the first time.

Onyeocha praised Swan for his support and has promised continuous collaboration with the association to encourage the growth and development of sports in the state.
