The Federal Government denies involvement in or supporting the failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb Sola Enikanolaye, rejected the claim in a statement issued on Thursday and described it as an attempt to misinform the public.
The statement read, “The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to a series of false and mischievous claims circulating on social media, which suggest that the recent failed coup attempt in the Republic of Niger had the support of ECOWAS and, insinuatingly, the support of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria categorically rejects these claims as they are baseless, irresponsible and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and tarnish the image of Nigeria.”
The minister described Nigeria as a peace-loving country, a defender of constitutional order, and a pillar of democracy and stability not only in West Africa but also in the Sahel and the African continent.

“Nigeria will never support an illegal or unconstitutional change of government anywhere, no matter who is involved or which country is involved.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Nigeria’s position has been explained in our official press statement No: MFA/PR/2026/220 dated 30 August 2026, in which the Nigerian government expressed deep concern over the situation in Niger Republic and urged the return of stability and constitutional order in the neighboring country in a peaceful, inclusive and participatory manner,” the statement read.
The minister said Nigerians were deeply concerned by the unconstitutional change of government.
“As neighboring countries bound by close ties of history, brotherhood and culture, Nigeria desires nothing but peace, security, democracy and development for Niger, the sub-region and the Sahel.
“As stated in the press statement, any violent attempt to resolve political differences is contrary to this goal and Nigeria’s long-standing foreign policy.
“While Nigeria is a proud and committed member of ECOWAS, it would be unfair, mischievous and completely wrong to suggest that Nigeria supported or condoned the military coup.
“We urge Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to ignore the videos and narratives being spread online by individuals seeking to sow discord,” the statement added.
The Minister said Nigeria remained firmly committed to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and to the African Union’s zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government.
“Nigeria will continue to work with ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community to defend democracy, uphold the rule of law and promote peace and stability in our region,” he added.
