The sports director of NUESA Lyon guarantees the preparation of the teaching staff

The Director of Sports, University of Lagos Faculty of Education Students Association (NUESA), Awoniyi Opeyemi, popularly known as Lyon, has expressed confidence in the faculty’s preparation for the upcoming Vice Chancellor’s Cup (VC Cup), scheduled for July 2026.

In an interview with Sportxvibe.com.ng after the conclusion of the Faculty of Education Dean’s Cup, in which NAPHER SD emerged as the overall winner, Lyon described the tournament as an important platform to identify athletes who will represent the faculty in the inter-faculty competition.

The Dean Cup served as a selection ground

Lyon said the competition was designed not only to entertain but also to seek out talented players capable of competing at a higher level.

“This particular tournament is more of a scouting platform for the higher tournaments in the school system,” he said. “We have been able to select players who stood out and will represent us in the VC Cup.”

He added that the college has already identified several promising athletes and believes the VC Cup could expose them to opportunities beyond the university system.

“We aim higher for our boys. Not just within the school program. Some of them already compete professionally in addition to being students,” Lyon said.

Reflecting on his mandate

Looking back on his time as athletic director, Lyon described the role as challenging but rewarding, emphasizing the effort required to manage athletic affairs within the Faculty of Education.

“It has been an incredible experience. Education students are not easy to deal with, but the progress we have made is a great achievement for the entire executive and faculty,” he said.

He also expressed pride in the changes introduced during his administration and said future leaders would need to build on the foundations already established.

“Whoever takes over next year will have to work harder. One of our main goals has been to give student-athletes a platform to showcase themselves,” Lyon added.

Focus shifts to July 2026

With the Dean Cup over, attention now turns to preparations for the VC Cup. Lyon maintained that the faculty is determined to compete strongly and make a significant impact in the interfaculty tournament.

According to him, the scouting process has already produced a core group of athletes who are expected to lead the faculty challenge when the competition begins in July 2026.
