Tinubu pressed ahead to create a state police, sending a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate

President Bola Tinubu has continued his determination to create a state police force as he has submitted a Constitutional Amendment Bill calling for its creation to the Senate.

The proposed law passed on Tuesday aims to amend relevant provisions in the 1999 Constitution to create a legal framework for state police forces across the federation.

The move comes after President Trump repeatedly called for constitutional reform to allow states to play a greater role in securing their territories.

In February, Tinubu urged the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to accommodate the country’s police, and described the reforms as necessary to tackle terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

The state police proposal has gained momentum in recent months, with both chambers of the National Assembly advancing a constitutional amendment process aimed at decentralizing police powers to the states.

The Senate is also expected to reconvene today for an emergency plenary session as lawmakers attempt to pass the bill and advance one of the most far-reaching security reforms in the country’s democratic history.
