US President Donald Trump is expected to give Iran just a few days to agree on a unified proposal to end the war, US media reported, citing US officials.
According to the report, Trump is ready to extend the current ceasefire from three to five days, citing an American source and a White House official respectively.
The extension announced on Tuesday is therefore intended to be short-term.
Trump plans to give Tehran a limited window to produce a joint proposal to renew negotiations and restart the diplomatic process, he said.
It was unclear whether this timeline had been communicated to Iranian officials.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president had not set a firm deadline for Iran to submit a proposal, but stressed that Trump would ultimately determine the timing.
Previously, Trump unilaterally extended the ceasefire shortly before its expiration, saying hostilities would stop until the Iranian leadership presented a unified negotiating position.
He did not specify a new deadline in his post on Truth Social.
Iran has not responded publicly.
