Turkish VolkerThe UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters on Wednesday that if the issues were not addressed, they risked casting a shadow on the tournament, which opens on Thursday in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“The big sporting events are is intended as an event where the world comes together in unity and peacehe said.
Tournaments must be ‘dignified and safe’
“Tradition [in ancient Greece] is that this should also lead to some kind of ceasefire. It is clear that the World Cup needs to provide a dignified and safe environment for the competing teams, but also for the supporters, for the whole of society, and frankly for the world.”
Among the reported incidents related to the US entry, the Iranian national team moved its training camp from Arizona to Mexico, with several Iranian officials being denied visas.
A FIFA-accredited Somali referee was refused entry and turned back amid reports of “vetting concerns”, and images circulated showing a Senegalese player being searched by security officers on a US airport tarmac.
Fans are also affected. Supporters from countries including Morocco and Scotland have reported having their travel documents refused or revoked shortly before departure, despite making expensive travel arrangements.
Wider concerns
Türk warned that these examples highlight broader concerns regarding the implementation of immigration enforcement measures. He called for policies that respect human rights and dignity, especially during global events that aim to unite people.
The High Commissioner emphasized that major sporting events must provide a safe and inclusive environment for players, fans and officials. He described the World Cup as an opportunity to encourage unity, and stressed that the global nature of the competition places a responsibility on host countries to uphold international standards.
End dehumanization
These concerns come amid broader scrutiny of human rights issues related to major sporting events and the responsibilities of host countries.
“I also hope that dehumanization of others, dehumanization of migrants, dehumanization of refugees and asylum seekers will end.,” continued Mr. Türk.
“No one benefits from a divisive and polarizing narrative.”
