The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that President Bola Tinubu on Friday announced Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of the Federation. His appointment is subject to Senate approval.

Ajulo, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, said the new code of conduct would help restore public confidence in the nation’s judicial system.

Ajulo, in a statement setting out the agenda for the new chief justice, said the code of conduct should enshrine the ethical and professional standards expected of judges and other judicial officials.

“It will have to guarantee the integrity, impartiality and independence of the judiciary. This is necessary to maintain public confidence in the system.

“The judiciary can earn the public’s trust through unwavering transparency, accountability and the utmost fairness in all judicial proceedings.

“It will prioritize a comprehensive judicial reform agenda, addressing the systemic challenges of inadequate funding, infrastructure deficits and the pressing problem of case backlogs, to improve the efficiency and accessibility of our justice system,” he said.

Ajulo said this would also promote a spirit of collaborative synergy between the judiciary, legislature and executive branches, thereby resolving tensions and safeguarding the independence of the courts.

According to him, he will invest heavily in strengthening the capacity of judges and judicial personnel, while leveraging technological innovations to improve efficiency and expand access to justice for all.

Ajulo urged the new Chief Justice to support initiatives that promote the noble ideals of gender equality and diversity within the hallowed halls of the judiciary.

According to the Attorney General of Ondo State, this will strengthen the institution and reflect the diversity of our society.

Congratulating the new Acting Chief Justice, Ajulo described Kekere-Ekun as a distinguished jurist with customary brilliance and an unwavering sense of purpose.

“Your extraordinary recognition is a true testament to your illustrious career, your commitment to the rule of law and your dedication to the fair administration of justice.

“Your judicial experience, your impeccable legal acumen and your principled leadership will be invaluable in guiding the Nigerian judiciary through this period of transition,” he said.

Ajulo said his reputation as a top-notch jurist inspired deep confidence and assurance that he would uphold the integrity of the Supreme Court and further strengthen public confidence in the nation’s judicial system.

“I have had the great honor of appearing before your esteemed presence on several occasions and have witnessed first-hand your formidable intellect, your impartiality and your staunch defense of the rule of law.

“This reputation as an impartial and practical jurist will undoubtedly be instrumental in restoring public confidence in the judiciary,” he said. (NAN)
