The Senate passes the bill on the abdominalization of the Kampala Convention on IDP – Thage

The Nigerian Senate approved the African Union Convention for the protection and assistance of the internal displaced people (tame and application) of 2025 for the third reading.

Adopted by the African Union in 2009, the The Kampala Convention is a regional treaty aimed at protecting and assisting the indoor displaced people (IDP) in Africa.

The agreement establishes a picture to prevent displacement, provide assistance to the displaced people and find lasting solutions for their return or reintegration. Nigeria signed the Kampala convention in 2009, but has not yet formally domesticated it in its national laws.

Sponsored by Vice -president of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, the bill was sent to the Senate for competition after he was approved by the Chamber.

The passage of the bill followed the consideration and adoption of the recommendations presented by the leader of the Senate, Bamidele Opeyemi at the plenary Tuesday.

“This bill was read for the first time on Tuesday 10 December 2024. Try to tame and enforce the African Union Convention in Nigeria for the protection and assistance to the displaced people internally and to the elimination of the causes at the root and the internal displaces in which Nigeria. Through the necessary legislative process of the Chamber of Representatives and I urge you to support the bill and direct them to the Committee completely Clause for clause, “said Opeyemi.
