Only 39% of the candidates passed the admission exam to the technical college of 2025 – Nabteb

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (Nabteb) revealed that only 39 percent of the candidates who occurred for the admission exam to 2025 in federal and state technical colleges have obtained a 50 % or higher score.

Nabteb’s chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, revealed it on Wednesday during the start of the National Common Common Entire Examination (Ncee) selection of 2025/2026 in the selection and placement exercise in Benin City, in the state of Edo.

According to the exam, a total of 29,260 candidates registered for the exam in 203 centers at national level.

However, only 24,074 students participated, while 5,186 (17.72%) were absent.

The breakdown of the participants showed that 16,206 were males (67.32%) and 7,868 were women (32.68%).

Of those who took the exam, only 9,389 candidates (39%) managed to score 50 percent and beyond. Even more significant, only 316 students (1.31%) reached 70 percent and beyond, while 14,685 (61%) were unable to reach the 50 percent brand. Only eight candidates (0.03%) have reached the highest possible degree.

Mohammed expressed concern about poor performance, attributing it to multiple systemic challenges that undermine technical education in Nigeria.

These include the lack of qualified instructors in the main professional trade, insufficient technical training centers in local governments and the lack of modern equipment in many colleges.

He listed the operations examined to include 17 engineering operations, seven construction operations, eight various negotiations and four business operations.

The head of Nabteb asked for urgent legislative and political reforms, increased funding and investments in infrastructure and training of teachers to renew the technical and professional education system.

“The future of Nigeria’s industrial development depends on the strength of his technical education,” said Mohammed.

“We must equip our institutions with modern tools, well trained staff and a political framework that supports the acquisition of skills pursuant to basic.”

The Board of Directors began the selection and placement process for candidates in 32 state technical colleges and 171 at national level.
