Student, boyfriend arrested to falsify the kidnapping to the N10M family in Anambra

The State Police Command of Anambra arrested a 28 -year -old student and his boyfriend for presumably staged his kidnapping in an attempt to extort N10 million from his family.

The suspicions, identified as Chinecherem Nwookoye, an Enugu State University of Science and Technology (Esut) student, and its 30 -year -old partner, Chinecherem Aronu, were arrested by the agents of the quick response team (RS) after an operation led by intelligence.

The command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the arrest on Sunday, said that the Nwookoye family had reported that his death on July 8, 2025, after saying to return home from school but never arrived. Even his phone was turned off, feeding the fears of a real kidnapping.

The following day, the family received a call from a man who claimed the liability of kidnapping and asked for a redemption of N10 million. The redemption was subsequently negotiated up to N3 million, with N1 million paid in the victim’s bank account.

“By acting in credible intelligence, the agents monitored suspicions in a loggia on the temporary site of Unizik, Awka, where Nwookoye was found in the company of Aronu,” said Ikenga.

After the interrogation, the duo confessed to exploiting the false kidnapping. According to reports, Nwookoye admitted that the idea was inspired by a film and that the plan was to collect capital for his boyfriend to start a business.

The police commissioner in the state, Cp Ikioye Orutuug, ordered the immediate pursuit of suspicions, describing their actions as a “worrying reflection of the deepening of moral decay among young people”.

The accident is added to an increasing list of kidnappings on stage throughout the country, with similar cases reported in the states of Lagos and Delta in recent years.

In March 2024, a 19 -year -old student simulated his kidnapping to put pressure on his parents to sponsor a journey abroad. In the same way, in August 2023, two brothers in the state of the delta staged the kidnapping of their cousin in the failed attempt to share the redemption.

Security experts have connected the tendency to glamorization of crime in films, economic difficulties and the drop in parents’ supervision.

The police urged the public to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities, ensuring that the command will continue to rely on operations based on intelligence to dismantle the evolving criminal tactics.
