FG urges broadcasters to fight fake news ahead of Nigeria elections

The Federal Government has called on broadcast organizations across Nigeria to take decisive measures to prevent the spread of fake news and disinformation as the country prepares for another election cycle.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this appeal on Wednesday during the 81st General Assembly and 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON), held in Abuja

Media integrity is fundamental to democracy

Speaking at the event, Idris highlighted that the run-up to elections often witnesses a wave of misleading information, which could undermine public trust.

He noted that broadcasters have a crucial responsibility to ensure accurate and balanced reporting, as the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process depends largely on the integrity of media coverage.

According to him, the media plays a powerful role in shaping public opinion and guiding national conversations, especially during politically sensitive times.

The broadcasting sector is facing rapid changes

The minister highlighted the ongoing transformation in the broadcasting sector, driven by digital innovation, emerging technologies and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI).

Despite these changes, he urged media organizations to remain committed to their core mandate of educating, informing and uniting citizens.

He described the airwaves as a public good, stressing that how they are managed has a direct impact on national unity, civic awareness and democratic stability.

Tinubu Administration Reaffirms Support for Media Sector

Idris reiterated the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to fostering a responsible and independent media environment.

He said the government will continue to implement policies that encourage investment, promote innovation and strengthen regulatory frameworks without compromising freedom of expression.

However, he acknowledged the challenges facing the industry, including misinformation, evolving technologies and economic pressures impacting media operations.

He emphasized that addressing these issues requires collaboration among stakeholders and a shared commitment to the standards of ethical journalism.

BON urged to lead sector reforms

Furthermore, BON President Salihu Dembos urged broadcasters to take a leading role in shaping national media policies and advancing professional standards.

He encouraged the organization to bridge the gap between traditional broadcasting and modern digital media, while promoting innovation and skills development.

Dembos highlighted the importance of producing Nigerian content that can compete globally, describing storytelling as a key asset for the country’s creative industry.

Credibility remains the media’s strongest asset

Highlighting the growing influence of disinformation, Dembos warned that trust has become the most valuable currency in modern media.

He urged broadcasters to prioritize credibility and maintain high ethical standards to remain relevant and competitive.

He also called for strategic leadership, better monetization of content and capacity building for future media professionals.

The BON General Assembly, he added, should serve as a platform to promote innovation, unity and long-term reforms in Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.
