… Flaws that ‘mislead’ reports of Ogun APC meetings
…Promises to avoid pre-determined primaries
Daud Olatunji
Former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has dismissed media reports that he has been pressuring aspirants to withdraw from the 2027 senatorial race, describing such claims as “misrepresentation” of proceedings at a recent meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun Central.
Amosun, in a statement issued by his press office on Sunday, clarified that the meeting, held on April 23, 2026, at the residence of elder statesman Olusegun Osoba, was convened at his instance following speculation over his possible candidacy.
According to him, contrary to what was reported in some media, he never asked any aspirant to resign for him.
He explained that three aspiring senators had previously contacted him to ask for his support and had individually indicated a willingness to withdraw if he decided to contest.
Amosun, however, stressed that he had never asked for such concessions, stressing that doing so would be undemocratic and inconsistent with his political principles.
“At no point in the meeting did I ask anyone to withdraw from the race because that would be undemocratic and unacceptable,” he said.
The former governor, who represented Ogun Central in the Senate and served as governor for two terms, reaffirmed his commitment to democratic ideals, adding that he would not participate in any primary election where the outcome had been predetermined.
He said: “What I made clear in the meeting, and what I reiterate, is that I will not be part of a primary where the outcome is already decided.”
Amosun also cautioned the media against publishing inaccurate reports of political meetings, urging journalists to verify information from credible sources before disseminating.
“I advise the media to correctly report the proceedings of the meetings by cross-checking the reports provided by the interested parties,” he added.
The clarification comes amid growing political realignments within the APC in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders intensifying consultations on party tickets in Ogun Central Senatorial District.
