Court sentences to terrorists linked to deadly 2015 Maiduguri attack – THIS UPDATE

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has reaffirmed the determination of the federal government to eradicate terrorism from Nigeria, declaring that the authorities will “fight with every inch of our blood” to ensure the safety of all citizens.

Fagbemi made the statement on Friday after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced a Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 terror attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Judge James Omotosho handed down the sentence after finding Yarima guilty of seven counts of terrorism brought by the federal government.

The court sentenced the accused to death on the seventh count of participating in acts of terrorism during the 2015 Maiduguri attacks.

In addition to the death sentence, Judge Omotosho imposed a life sentence on Yarima on the sixth count of receiving training in weapons and weapons handling in preparation to commit acts of terrorism.

The judge also sentenced him to 35 years in prison on the first count of professing to belong and continue to belong to Boko Haram, a proscribed terrorist organization. Yarima was further sentenced to 30 years in prison on count five and 10 years each on counts two, three and four.

The charges, marked FHC/KNJ/CR/971/2026, were dated May 26 and filed on May 29 by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

According to the prosecution, Yarima, also known as La’ari, with cash number 1636 hailing from Lawanti area of ​​Mafa Local Government Area of ​​Borno State, belonged to Boko Haram between 2009 and 2015 before his arrest.

The federal government accused him of participating in the 2015 attacks in Maiduguri, an offense punishable under section 2(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Fagbemi, who personally led the federal government’s prosecution team, described the conviction as another demonstration of the government’s determination to ensure terrorists are brought to justice.

“We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe place for all,” the Attorney General said.
