2027: Kwankwaso, Dickson rally support for NDC amid legal setbacks

The vice presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reiterated his party’s resolve to build a stronger political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections following a strategic meeting with the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson.

Kwankwaso disclosed the meeting in a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday, revealing that he visited Dickson at his residence in Abuja as part of a series of consultations designed to strengthen the cohesion and electoral readiness of the newly established political party.

He wrote, “Today, I paid a courtesy call on the National Leader of our party, NDC, His Excellency Seriake Dickson at his residence in Abuja.

“This engagement is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the party’s unity, resilience and strategic readiness as we prepare for the 2027 elections.”

The former presidential candidate also stated that his party remains committed to democratic values and expressed confidence that the judiciary will ultimately resolve existing legal challenges.

According to him, “As true democrats, we remain committed to the rule of law and have absolute confidence in the judicial process. No temporary setback can weaken the spirit of a movement built on hope, justice, equality and the collective aspirations of the Nigerian people.”

Calling for calm among party supporters, Kwankwaso urged members, supporters and other Nigerians to remain focused on the party’s long-term goals despite recent developments.

He said, “I urge all party members, supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to remain calm, resolute and focused on our common mission. Together, we will overcome every challenge.

“Nigeria will be fine.”

Dickson also confirmed the meeting in a separate post on his official Facebook page, describing the discussions as productive and centered on the future of the party.

According to him, the two leaders “discussed issues of mutual interest regarding our party” and reaffirmed their commitment to preserving the multi-party democratic system in Nigeria.

The former governor of Bayelsa State further stated, “We reaffirmed our resolve to unite in the fight for multi-party democracy, and I briefed him on the steps the party is taking to rectify the disruption caused by the unconscionable decision of the Federal High Court.

The meeting comes just days after the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, overturned an earlier decision issued on December 10, 2025, which ordered the electoral commission to register the NDC as a political party.

In the latest decision in Lawsuit No. FHC/LKJ/CS/49/2025, Judge Isah Dashen stated that the previous decision was constitutionally flawed because not all necessary parties were heard before the decision was taken.

The court followed up on a request submitted by the Peace Movement Party, which stated that they had a legal interest in this case and should participate in the trial process before the initial verdict was handed down.

Despite the legal setback, the NDC leader insisted the party remains focused on consolidating its structure nationally and preparing for the 2027 elections while pursuing available legal remedies.
