Former National Vice President of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has described the death of the party’s former National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as
a huge and profound loss to Nigeria and the African business community
George, who said he worked closely with Tukur at the highest levels of the party, also described the former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former Industry Minister as “a confidant, a close ally and a patriotic champion whose interests transcend geographical boundaries”.
Tukur, who died on Saturday in Abuja, three days shy of his 91st birthday, was buried on Sunday in Yola, Adamawa State.
George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, said Tukur, a statesman of enormous stature, had contributed to the political and economic development of Nigeria for decades.
“I worked closely with him as National Chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014. He was a patriot who always thought about how Nigeria could sit comfortably in the community of nations as an economic giant.
“I commend his contribution to African business and investment through his leadership of the Africa Business Roundtable and the NEPAD Business Group.
“As Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 1975 to 1982, you expanded critical maritime hubs such as Apapa Port and Tin Can Island.
“Your departure leaves an immense void not only within the structure of our party but across the entire political landscape.
“During your tenure, you have been more than a leader; you have been a peacemaker, a mentor and a tireless organizer who listened to every member, from the grassroots to the national level.
“I take comfort in the lasting legacy of your selflessness and the solid foundation you have built for us. I also extend my deepest condolences to your family, loved ones and the entire party faithful.
“It is a great pleasure that you ran a good race, without a doubt your passing has left a significant void that will be difficult to fill.
“Our great leader, I say you ran a good race and finished well, continue to rest in the bosom of Almighty God.”
