Yobe: The Court sentences a 45-year-old man to death for the murder of his wife

The Yobe State High Court in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the murder of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.

The ruling was handed down on Wednesday by the court’s chief judge, Justice GK Kaigama, after the prosecution presented eight witnesses to support its case.

Musa was arrested by the Yobe State Police Command on January 4, 2024, following the death of his 42-year-old wife at their residence in New Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Damaturu.

He was later arraigned on charges of manslaughter.

During the police investigation, Musa allegedly claimed that an unidentified man had assaulted his wife while they slept in the same bed.

According to his account, he woke up after hearing his wife screaming and discovered that she had suffered a stab wound to the neck and was bleeding profusely.

He also said he saw a man with a knife and attempted to tackle him, but two other people reportedly intervened and helped the suspect escape.

Musa maintained his innocence throughout the trial, insisting through his defense lawyer that intruders had entered their home and killed his wife.

However, after considering the evidence presented before the court, Justice Kaigama found the defendant guilty of manslaughter.

The judge found that the prosecution had successfully established all the essential elements of the crime and proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Judge Kaigama subsequently imposed the death sentence by hanging the convict.

The court also informed Musa of his right to appeal the ruling within 30 days, in accordance with applicable law.
