Nigerian medal hopeful withdraws from Paris 2024 due to injury

Nigerian boxer Dolapo Omole has expressed his disappointment after a knee injury forced him to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Omole won a gold medal in Senegal during the qualifiers and is considered a strong contender for the Nigerian team.

“I am depressed and I hope to get up stronger because I am in a very bad state. The knee injury is very painful; I wish a speedy recovery,” he said in a statement released by the African Boxing Confederation.

Omole’s trainer, Adura Olalehin, confirmed the fighter’s withdrawal for medical reasons.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian boxer Leta Fikremariyam Yadesa will now replace the Nigerian, according to the sport’s governing body.

Omole had previously defeated Yadesa at the African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in September 2023.

With Omole’s departure, Nigeria’s boxing squad for Paris 2024 now includes Cynthia Ogunsemilore in the 60kg women’s lightweight category and Adams Olaore in the 92kg men’s heavyweight division.
