From Flying Eagles guest to River Plate pro: Spiff signs new deal

Jonathan Spiff’s journey from Flying Eagles guest in 2025 to River Plate professional has taken another important step after the Argentina-born striker signed his first senior contract with the club.

Spiff, who has Nigerian roots through his father, was invited to join the Flying Eagles during preparations for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Although he did not make the final squad, his career in Argentina has continued to progress.

River Plate has rewarded the 19-year-old with a contract until December 2028.

‎Spiff was born in Buenos Aires and arrived at River when he was only seven years old after impressing during a trial.

He gradually moved through the club’s youth ranks before making his Reserve debut in February 2026. His goalscoring form earned him an opportunity with the senior team.

In May, Spiff was named in River Plate’s squad for the Copa Sudamericana match against Bragantino. He came off the bench at the end of the 1-1 draw to make his first team debut.

He also played against Blooming in the competition before returning to the reserves, where he continued to score goals and develop his game.

The new contract is a major milestone for Spiff, particularly after the attention he received from both Nigeria and Argentina during his teenage years.

The striker remains eligible to represent Nigeria thanks to his Nigerian father, while his birthplace grants him eligibility for Argentina. ‎For now, however, the future of his club is increasingly clear.

Spiff has secured a professional contract with River Plate and will now look to build on his first-team experience as he continues his rise in Argentine football.

‎Sports247 deduced that the new agreement keeps Spiff at River Plate until the end of 2028.
