Former Senegal player Aliou Cisse has parted ways with his country’s national team after he resigned from his position as coach.
Cisse, who led the team to their first win at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2022, served as coach for nine and a half years.
The Teranga Lions were scheduled to begin preparations for this month’s double AFCON qualifier against Malawi, but they will now do so without Cisse.

The 48-year-old’s contract expires in August but he remained in charge for Senegal’s two matches in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers last month, a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso and a 1-0 win over Burundi.
The country’s football federation (FSF) wanted Cisse’s deal renewed but the sports ministry, under the new government of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has made the decision to end his long tenure.
Cisse, who earned 35 caps for Senegal as a player, took over the responsibility in March 2015 and his longevity in the role helped keep the Teranga Lions as Africa’s top-ranked team for more than four years.
