The Governor of the State of Akwa Ibom, Umo Eno, officially deserted from the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) to the Congress All Progressives (APC).
The governor announced his defection in Uyo on Friday, declaring that the decision followed “three months of broad consultation” with the parties concerned throughout the state.
“For some time, the political space, in particular in this state and in the nation in general, has been flooded with the news of my probable movement from the PDP, the platform that provided the levers and the scale of my political ascent to the position of governor of this state.
“This discussion has aroused various areas of analysis in the process. Today I am here to answer some of those annoying questions. As the Dalai Lama had said:” We should always be open to change, but not to let our shared values go, “he said.
The governor said he had presented a formal letter of resignation to the PDP at the level of the district, with copies also delivered to the state of the party and to the national presidents.
“At the beginning of this morning, I presented a formal letter of resignation from the Democratic Party of the peoples to the President of the Department. The same copy was sent to both the President of State and the National President. I want to thank the Democratic Party of people for their support, for their love, for their love and for having worked with me in these two years in the last two years in the affairs of Akwa Ibom’s affairs through the party lines, but this is a defined moment.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for his support during his mandate, but said that his decision was motivated by the desire to align the state of Akwa Ibom with the federal government for the continuous benefits.
By declaring his admiration for President Bola Tinubu, said the governor, Akwa Ibom has gained more from federal programs being politically aligned in the center.
Despite the defection, Governor Eno assured residents who would continue to work tirelessly for their well -being, regardless of political affiliations.
Last month, Governor Eno had said that his decision was not born for hatred or tenat of the PDP, the party that gave him the platform to become governor. Instead, he expressed concern for the current state of the party and the challenges he has to face in view of the next elections.
“My love for the PDP remains intact,” he said. “However, the system no longer gives space to comfort or alignment, especially at national level. The party is deeply divided and spends every day trying to solve the internal crises.”
Governor Eno explained that his transition to the APC is a strategic decision aimed at guaranteeing the future of the state of Akwa Ibom. He observed that while he is confident in his popularity and in the work done throughout the state, instability at national level could jeopardize their electoral plans, in particular regarding post-electoral technicalities such as the INNC documentation and legal signatories.
He underlined: “This decision does not concern the fear of losing an election in Akwa Ibom. I trust people and I know that we have done the job. But the disunity in the PDP at national level is alarming”.
The governor clarified that his political philosophy is based on progress, not on personality disorder.
The Eno Governor also stressed that Akwa Ibom’s policy does not only concern the loyalty of the party, but the agenda of the factor, which transcends the party lines. “There is no ideological difference between our parts; anyone who thinks differently is welcome to a debate.”
He urged the people of Akwa Ibom to continue to love and protect the peace they currently enjoy. “Other states are fighting insecurity and disorders. Peace is the basis for development. Without it, people will leave and progress will be lost.
