Alleged coup: Military begins trial of officers as court-martial sits in Abuja

The Nigerian military inaugurated a General Court Martial on Friday to try officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government, officially beginning proceedings in a case that has attracted national attention.

The hearing, held at the Scorpion Guards Brigade canteen in Asokoro, began under tight security, with the accused officers transported to the scene at around 8.53am.

Journalists were prevented from entering the courtroom as the proceedings were taking place behind closed doors, while several civil lawyers were spotted at the scene, indicating that the accused had legal representation.

The trial marks the culmination of months of internal investigations by the military into an alleged coup plot involving serving personnel.

The case dates back to October 2025, when around 16 military officers, both senior and junior cadres, were arrested for alleged acts of indiscipline.
