Bandit ambush, kill two soldiers in Ogun Highway attack

Suspected armed bandits have killed two Nigerian Army soldiers in a violent ambush along the Mowe-Ibafo axis of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, in the early hours of Monday.

The attackers reportedly opened fire on military personnel in what eyewitnesses described as a sudden and coordinated assault, leaving two soldiers dead at the scene.

While details of the incident remained vague as of this writing, a viral video circulating on social media showed the lifeless body of a soldier dressed in camouflage being evacuated in a van, alongside plainclothes security officers believed to be police officers and civilians.

The development has sparked concern over growing insecurity along the busy Lagos-Ibadan corridor, a major transit route in the South West.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, CSP ‘Seyi Babaseyi, said the command was not aware of any such incident in Abeokuta or any other part of the state at the time of investigation.

However, the Nigerian military confirmed the attack.

Speaking on behalf of the 35th Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Major Idereghi Samuel, acknowledged the incident but said the military was still gathering details of what happened.

He added that the exact location and full circumstances of the attack were yet to be ascertained, promising that further information would be made available once confirmed.

Security sources said efforts were underway to trace the attackers, as tension gripped parts of the affected axis following the deadly encounter.

The incident adds to growing concerns over sporadic attacks on security agents in several parts of the country, particularly in areas bordering major highways and forest corridors suspected to be criminal hideouts.
