The Defense headquarters (DHQ) responded to the recent claims by the Ambassador of Türkiye designated in Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, regarding the alleged operation of a terrorist group within the Nigerian borders.

While spoken during the Democracy of Turkey and the National Unity Day, Poroy claimed that the members of Fethullah’s terrorist organization (fetus), a group put out of the Turkey, had emigrated and operated in Nigeria under the remains of managing educational and health institutions.

According to him, “the presence of this organization represents a threat to each country in which it operates … in particular in the sectors of education and health care”.

Reacting to Thursday’s request, the director of the Defense Media Operations, the main general Markus Kangye, said that the Defense headquarters did not deal with the comments of the ambassador as an official position or a verified security threat.

“The information from the person you are talking about, as regards the headquarters of the defense, is an unofficial announcement. Everyone is free to say what they want. There is freedom of information,” said Kangye.

He stressed that Nigeria was a sovereign nation and fully able to carry out its evaluations on national security issues and terrorism without foreign interference.

“Nigeria is an independent sovereign nation that can think and act for herself,” he said.

While recognizing the international ties of the country, Kangye has warned against acritically accepting foreign claims that had not been corroborated by the Nigeria intelligence community.

He stressed that security decisions would only be based on the internal assessments and strategic interests of Nigeria.

“We cannot take what others say about Nigeria and accept it without our independent evaluation. Nigeria knows what it is and the Nigerian army has its own code of conduct and operational guidelines,” he said.

Kangye warned that such foreign comments could be part of the efforts to influence perception or public policy.

“There are propagandists all over the world. Psychological oppressions continue everywhere. That’s why we have to be alert,” he said
