The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for urgent intervention in addressing the critical operational challenges facing the command.
Agbonika made the appeal on Friday, during the official visit of the IGP to the Edo State Police Command, where he said the command requires improved logistics, arms and ammunition, armored vehicles and manpower to effectively address insecurity across the state.
The PC noted that “the command is faced with shortages of operational vehicles, insufficient weapons and ammunition, inadequate armored vehicles to deal with bandits, manpower deficits and the need for continuous specialized training and retraining of personnel.”
The Police Commissioner noted that despite the challenges, the command remained committed to combating violent crime through proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and the strategic deployment of tactical resources.
He revealed that the command had intensified high visibility policing activities, bush clearing operations, intelligence-led raids and confidence-building patrols across identified criminal hideouts and hotspots within the State.
Agbonika further said the command continued to strengthen community-oriented policing and collaboration with sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders in maintaining peace and order.
He said continued security operations had led to the arrest of suspected kidnappers, armed robbery suspects and members of criminal gangs terrorizing parts of the State.
The Commissioner also attributed the recent operational successes recorded by the newly launched Violent Crime Response Units (VCRUs) to the leadership and reforms introduced by the IGP.
He commended the Inspector General for his support to the command in the areas of logistics, tactical operations and personnel development, saying such interventions have improved policing in the State.
Agbonika, however, appealed for further support to strengthen the operational capacity of the command and improve its ability to rapidly respond to emerging security threats.
