The blast was aimed at creating insecurity due to the state of emergency in Rivers-Fubara.

Fubara accuses pro-Wike protesters of attempting to bomb the hotel. Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, has said the aim of those who detonated explosives around the Presidential Hotel during the protest by loyalists of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, was to create the impression of increased insecurity in the state.

The governor noted that the act was intentional knowing that the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation, headed by its Chairman, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu, was in Port Harcourt to meet the state government.
