FG will not surrender to terrorists – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said his administration will not bow to threats from bandits and terrorists, assuring Nigerians of renewed efforts to address insecurity and economic hardship across the country.

The President’s position was conveyed on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during a national interfaith religious service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking the celebration of Democracy Day 2026.

Akume, speaking on behalf of the President, said the Federal Government is fully aware of the prevailing economic hardship, insecurity, abductions and displacement affecting various parts of the country, stressing that efforts are underway to respond with urgency and empathy.

According to him, the administration is intensifying measures to strengthen the security architecture, while also working to ease the economic burden on citizens.

“The government is sensitive to all these pains, shares these pains and has listened to your cries,” he said.

He added that the rescue and safe return of Nigerians held captive by criminal groups remains a national priority, stressing that security agencies are being strengthened and better supported to address emerging threats.

Reiterating the government’s stance on insecurity, Akume said: “The Government of Nigeria will never succumb to terrorism, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation.”

He argued that the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 reflects the resilience of Nigerians and the sacrifices of democracy advocates, especially those who lost their lives during the June 12 struggle.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the SGF urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech and divisive rhetoric, warning against actions that could undermine national unity.

He also warned young people against being used as tools of crime, disinformation and political violence, advising them to safeguard their future from short-term political incentives.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than the temporary comforts of any politician,” he warned.

Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, media and families to promote peace, tolerance and national cohesion, commending the military and other security agencies for their continued role in defending the country’s democracy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to the message, reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are more widely felt by Nigerians.
