Glasgow 2026: Ajishola Kadijat becomes the fourth Nigerian boxer eliminated after losing by split decision

Nigeria’s disappointing boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued on Sunday when Ajishola Kadijat became the fourth Nigerian boxer to be knocked out of the competition.

Competing in the last 16 of the women’s 54kg category, Kadijat suffered a heartbreaking 2-3 split decision loss to Helen Jones of Wales, ending her hopes of winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

In the close bout, both fighters exchanged impressive combinations, but the judges narrowly favored the Welsh boxer, who advanced to the quarterfinals.

Kadijat’s elimination extends Team Nigeria’s woes in the boxing event after three other Nigerian boxers were eliminated on the opening day of the competition.

The latest setback means Nigeria’s medal aspirations in boxing have taken another major blow in the ongoing Games.

Despite the disappointment, the Nigerian team will look to other events in search of medals as the Commonwealth Games continue in Glasgow.

Nigeria has already had success in weightlifting, where the country claimed multiple medals, but the boxing team is yet to make a breakthrough in the tournament.

The XXIII Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow, Scotland, with athletes from across the Commonwealth competing for honors in a variety of sports.
