The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the disciplinary trial and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman over the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine “Mene” Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, after authorities confirmed that the officer violated force order 237 and established operational procedures governing the use of firearms.
Ogidi, described by family and associates as an emerging musical artiste, was allegedly shot dead during a police operation after he went to collect a consignment note on behalf of another person in Sapele.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, sparked outrage across Delta State and on social media, with growing calls for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the police team involved in the operation.
According to separate statements released Tuesday by the Delta State Police Command and force headquarters, officers assigned to the Effurun Area Command responded to information from members of the public regarding a suspect allegedly arrested while attempting to mail a package said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police authorities said while trying to take the suspect into lawful custody, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the operation, allegedly fired his firearm in violation of existing regulations, resulting in the death of Ogidi.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the killing in strong terms, describing the officer’s conduct as illegal, unprofessional and against the rules of engagement of the Nigerian Police Force.
The PC immediately ordered the arrest of the officer and ordered his transfer to the State Headquarters, Asaba before his subsequent movement to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary proceedings.
Police authorities confirmed that the officer has already been interrogated and transferred along with members of his team to Abuja, where they are expected to appear before the force disciplinary committee currently in session for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
The incident attracted public attention after a video circulated online showing the deceased mentioning an individual from Sapele who he said should be investigated in relation to the package.
Family members insist Ogidi was simply sent to collect the package and was not given the opportunity to explain himself or face a proper investigation before he was shot.
A relative of the deceased, who spoke publicly on the matter, said he had personally contacted the victim’s elder brother and sister and assured the family that the matter would be pursued thoroughly to ensure justice.
The relative also claimed that ASP Nuhu Usman did not act alone during the operation and said there were indications that other officers linked to the incident were being shielded from the investigation.
The allegations have intensified public calls for a broader investigation that goes beyond the officer who pulled the trigger.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, the Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
“The Command further reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extrajudicial conduct,” the statement read.
The force headquarters also confirmed the disciplinary action in a separate statement signed by the force’s public relations officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, saying preliminary findings established that the officer acted in clear breach of police operational rules.
The statement added that the Inspector General of Police had initiated immediate disciplinary proceedings and criminal prosecution of the officer while assuring the family of the deceased that justice would be served in accordance with the law.
“The Nigerian Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions, abuses of authority and any conduct that undermines public trust,” the statement added.
The IGP also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and appealed to the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes continue.
The killing reignited concerns about police brutality, abuse of authority and alleged extrajudicial actions by some officers, despite repeated assurances from the police hierarchy that transgressing officers would be sanctioned.
Civil society organisations, youth groups and residents in Delta State continued to call for transparent prosecution of all officers involved in the incident and renewed reforms to strengthen accountability and protect citizens’ rights during law enforcement operations.
