Lionel Messi became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games when he scored for Argentina against Jordan in Dallas on Saturday, surpassing Just Fontaine and Jairzinho, Reuters reports.
Substitute Messi scored a free kick from 25 meters in the 80th minute to make the score 3-1.
Messi’s good run began with Argentina’s 2-1 victory over Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He also scored against the Netherlands and Croatia, before scoring twice in an epic final with France, which ended with him lifting the trophy.
He continued that scoring streak into the 2026 finals after scoring a hat trick against Algeria and another two against Austria in Argentina’s second match, and his goal against Jordan took his World Cup goal tally to a record 19.

Fontaine scored in six consecutive games for France in 1958, and Jairzinho did the same for Brazil in 1970.
Earlier in the tournament, Messi became the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing German forward Miroslav Klose, with his first-half goal against Austria at Dallas Stadium taking his tally to 17.
He then scored a second against Austria, which finished 2-0, and his goal against Jordan now extends his World Cup goals to 19.
Messi can expand his goals when Argentina faces debutants Cape Verde in the round of 32 on July 3.
