The South East Basketball Association (SEBA) has questioned the motive behind the continued opposition to the relocation of the second phase of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Premier League Atlantic Conference to Enugu, suggesting that the debate could be linked to politics surrounding the upcoming NBBF board elections.
SEBA, in a statement signed by its Media Manager, Kennedy Onwunali, said the controversy over the choice of Enugu as the host venue was becoming unnecessarily politicised, insisting that the decision was solely about the development of basketball and the provision of a suitable platform for the competition.
The association reacted to the concerns raised by Ayo Bakare, stressing that stakeholders should focus on growing the sport rather than turning the venue decision into a regional or political issue.
SEBA questioned why the focus was on Enugu instead of allowing the conversation to focus on improving basketball facilities across the country.
The association also raised doubts about the relevance of the South East representative post on the NBBF board, arguing that attempts to influence the choice of the region before the elections should not be disguised as concerns about the organization of a basketball event.
“Basketball decisions should not become a tool for political calculations. The South East has the right to participate, host competitions and make choices that support the development of the game,” SEBA said.
SEBA argued that security challenges affecting different parts of Nigeria should be viewed as national issues and not used to single out a particular state or region.
According to the association, questioning the suitability of Enugu while ignoring similar realities in other parts of the country creates an unfair narrative against the region.
The body urged basketball stakeholders to allow the NBBF election process to be driven by record, expertise and contributions to the game rather than attempts to influence public perception through venue disputes.
SEBA added that the priority should remain the advancement of Nigerian basketball and the creation of opportunities for players, coaches and teams across the country.
