NRS reports viral infographic as scam and says there is no tax on new vehicles – THIS UPDATE

By Victor Osula, Abuja

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has dismissed as false a viral infographic claiming that a new vehicle tax will take effect from July 1, warning that the material is misleading and could be part of a scheme to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

In a statement released by Dare Adekambi, special advisor to NRS President Zach Adedeji, the agency said the widely circulated image did not originate from the service or any government institution.

He stressed that the federal government has not introduced any new vehicle taxes.

According to Adekambi, the infographic forces private, commercial and corporate vehicle owners to pay an unspecified tax through online platforms, banks and designated agents without providing any legal support or approved fee structure.

He noted that such vague directives are typical of fraudulent content designed to mislead the public.

The NRS also identified a critical discrepancy in the material, which directs users to http://www.firs.gov.ng for more information, rather than the agency’s official website, http://www.nrs.gov.ng. The report described this as a deliberate attempt to impersonate a government authority and create false credibility.

“The NRS wishes to categorically state that the information does not come from the service or any government agency. No new taxes have been introduced on vehicles as claimed,” Adekambi said.

He stressed that any legitimate tax policy should follow due process, including formal government approval, public announcement and clear implementation guidelines, none of which are evident in the infographic circulating.

Adekambi urged Nigerians to be careful when interacting with unverified digital content, especially those that ask for payments or direct users to unknown websites.

It warned that reliance on such materials could expose individuals and businesses to financial loss.

“Citizens are advised to ignore fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies,” it said.

The NRS reiterated its commitment to transparency and taxpayer protection, encouraging the public to follow its verified social media platforms and official website for accurate and timely information on tax matters.
