Obi: Because I keep changing political parties

Former Labor Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained that his repeated defections between political parties were driven by a desire to unite Nigerians and create a platform for national rebirth.

Obi stated this on Saturday while addressing delegates at the National Democratic Congress convention held in Abuja, where he reaffirmed his commitment to building what he described as a “new Nigeria”.

According to him, his movement is not motivated by political convenience or personal gain, but by the need to reposition the country through collective effort and shared values.

“We want to unite Nigeria. We want Nigerians to love each other. That’s why people think we are changing parties,” he said.

Drawing a distinction between opportunistic defections and values-driven decisions, Obi noted that while some politicians abandon principles to remain in power, his decision to change parties was driven by belief and the pursuit of a better national future.

“We are not changing parties for transactions. Some people change parties based on their principles, while others do so for the opposite reason. We are looking for an opportunity to build a new Nigeria that is possible,” he added.

The former governor of Anambra State also highlighted the symbolic importance of his movement, saying it reflects the same spirit that guided Nigeria’s founding fathers during the struggle for independence.

“That symbol represents the determination that our ancestors used to fight for independence. It is the same determination that we are using to rebuild Nigeria,” Obi said.

Obi’s political journey has seen him move through the major parties, starting with the All Progressives Grand Alliance between 2006 and 2014, before joining the People’s Democratic Party in 2014.

He later defected to the Labor Party ahead of the 2023 presidential election, where he emerged as the party’s candidate. In 2026, Obi joined the African Democratic Congress, but later left for the National Democratic Congress following reports of internal crises in the ADC.

Despite criticism related to his frequent party changes, Obi has maintained that his political decisions remain anchored in his vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.
