Micheal Ogbonna emerged winner of the fifth edition of the Dynamite Opens Scrabble tournament after an intense two-day competition held at the Agege Local Government Secretariat in Lagos.
Ogbonna put in a commanding performance, winning 14 games and losing four, with an impressive margin of +871 to finish atop the field of 48 players who competed in this highly competitive tournament.
For his efforts, he received a fictitious check of N300,000 as the star prize at the end of the event, marking a major milestone in his scrabble career.
Close behind was Kingsley Enyi, who recorded the same number of wins and losses (14-4), but finished second with a slightly smaller margin of +817.
The competition, however, was not easy at all. After the fourth round of games, the top positions suggested a very close race, with several players showing good form and the standings changing rapidly.
Players had to rely not only on depth of vocabulary but also on tactical board control, chip management, and mental stamina.
Benjamin Onuh, for example, posted the highest spread of the tournament at +1327, showing exceptional scoring ability. However, their 13 wins and five losses placed them third overall, highlighting how consistency in wins proved more decisive than high-goal games alone.
Other notable performances came from Mosope Muyiwa (+995), Ebikeme Adowei (+627) and Obende Martins (+507), all finishing with 12 wins and six losses. Babatunde Adeagbo also impressed with a differential of +327.
In the 11-win category, players like Oluwaseyi Giwa (+1175), Victor Ukpe (+696) and Adekola Adebisi (+864) showed resilience, while Benjamin Akpotu (+940) and Adebayo Sadiq (+279) remained competitive throughout the rounds.
Further down the standings, the likes of Peter Awonusi, Hafiz Adefemi and Bayo Abdulsalam battled in close matches, reflecting the depth of talent present at the tournament.
Among those who finished with 10 wins and eight losses were Ebenezer Toyeme, Femi Simpson and Chukwuemeka Idomele, while Priscilla Akhabue was also in the rankings.
