A con artist of the Nigerian series, Chimezie Nwabueze, was arrested by police in Canada for alleged involvement in $ 600,000 romance fraud.
A statement posted on the Regional Police Regional Police website on Monday revealed that Nwabueze was arrested on April 28 after he was charged with fraud.Read more
“Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Fraud Bureau have arrested and accused an individual in connection with alleged online romance fraud, with a total of more than $ 600,000,” the bureau said.
He noted that Nwabueze allegedly lied to his victims that he had an oil rig in the Middle East, which he needed money to sort with a promise of payment.
The suspect is said to have decided to communicate with the victims when they faced him, leaving the victims with a loss of $ 610,382.
“Between June 2021 and July 2023, two victims believed they were in a sincere romantic relationship with the suspect, which they met through an online dating platform,” he added.

“The suspect cheats claiming to have a ‘rig oil’ in the Middle East and really needs money, promises payment and finally the meeting. The victims only communicate with him electronically and have never met in person.
“After the victims faced the suspect, he cut all communication. They were never replaced and suffered a total financial loss of $ 610,382.
“On Monday, April 28, 2025, Chimezie Nwabueze, a 28 -year -old man from Toronto was arrested and charged with the following criminal offenses:
“Fraud is more than $ 5000 x2
Property ownership obtained by crime x2 ucs forged documents
The result of washing crime
Participate in criminal organizations that instruct the violation commission for criminal organizations
Nwabueze is released in an effort and will appear later before the Ontario Court in Bapton.
“Fraud investigators believe that there are more victims and Nwabueze is part of a larger criminal network that targets older adult dating websites for the purpose of exploiting customers that can be trusted or vulnerable to the purpose of fraud.
“Nwabueze was arrested in November 2023 by the Regional Police Peel where he used the exact same operating method and deceived other victims at a price of more than $ 250,000. The case is currently before the court.”
