Russian authorities said they had returned the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian troops, in return for the corpse of 19 Russian soldiers who were killed in battle.

Five Ukraine soldiers were killed while in captivity, said an Ukraine government agent.

Tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed on both sides since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, although no party regularly published data about their own victims.

The exchange of war prisoners and the return of war has become one of the few fields of cooperation between the two countries since the war began.

Both sides have intensified this effort in recent months during the discussion at Istanbul.

“According to the Russian, 1,000 bodies owned by Ukraine military personnel have been returned to Ukraine,” Ukraine coordination headquarters for the treatment of war prisoners said in a statement on Tuesday ..

The exchange was carried out with an agreement achieved between the two sides in Istanbul, Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said.

Kyiv initially said the two had agreed to “exchange” the bodies of 6,000 Ukrainian troops with as many Russia as possible, although Moscow always presented the agreement as a one -sided decision to repatriate the Ukrainians.
