Saudi Arabian authorities have executed a Nigerian citizen, Idris Ibrahim, following judicial proceedings over his conviction for cocaine trafficking in the Kingdom.
Ibrahim was executed in the Medina region on Monday, August 24, 2026, after his death sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal and subsequently by the Supreme Court.
According to DW Hausa’s report, Saudi authorities carried out the execution after the judicial proceedings against the Nigerian had ended.
Ibrahim was convicted of trafficking cocaine into Saudi Arabia, a crime that carries severe penalties under the country’s tough anti-drug laws.
Saudi Arabia maintains some of the harshest penalties for drug-related crimes, including capital punishment for people convicted of serious drug trafficking and smuggling crimes.
The execution heightens concerns about the severe consequences Nigerians and other foreign nationals face when convicted of drug crimes in Saudi Arabia and other countries with strict drug laws.
The circumstances of Ibrahim’s arrest, the amount of cocaine involved and whether he had legal representation during the proceedings were not immediately disclosed in the report.
Saudi authorities continued to impose harsh sanctions against drug trafficking as part of their campaign against the importation and distribution of illicit substances.
Ibrahim’s execution came after the completion of the appeal process, with both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upholding the previous ruling against him.
