The purpose of the debate:

• Identify best practices and gaps in dispute mechanisms based on the UN Charter
• Explore how diplomacy and mediation can build trust and prevent conflict
• Review implementation resolution 2788 (2025)which asked the Secretary-General to provide recommendations to further strengthen the peaceful dispute resolution mechanism one year after its adoption

Guiding questions: The ambassadors discussed how to use Chapter VI tools more consistently, strengthen the Secretary-General’s good offices, provide better support to Member States through mediation and technical advice, learn from past de-escalation successes and leverage regional and sub-regional organizations for early, locally-led conflict resolution.

Wider goals: This debate seeks practical recommendations to strengthen the Council’s preventive role and support peaceful pathways in potentially destabilizing situations.
